18.6.25: Review and Update on NW2045 Vision: Call To Action 2025 published

A new report from NW2045 contains a stark warning about the future of some of Scotland’s most remote mainland communities.

Funding from the Scottish Government’s Addressing Depopulation Fund via Highland Council and the Community Regeneration Fund have enabled us to produce the most detailed understanding possible of the state of play in communities in the North West, five years on from the publication of the NW2045 Community Vision.

The findings are clear, Coigach and North West Sutherland are facing an unprecedented demographic crisis, with population levels now at their lowest ever recorded, and the number of children and young people halving over just two decades.

11.6.25: RLUP Land+ Handbook shared

We are delighted to make available our Land+ Handbook: A community-led approach to collaboration,

for the benefit of people and place.

The Handbook - written by Rachel Skene and Lizzie Williams - is a compendium of the many strands of work that have taken place since the inception of the NW2045 Regional Land Use Partnership in 2021, through to Spring 2025, and represents the invaluable experience gained during this pilot phase. We have called our RLUP 'Land+', because land issues are connected to all other issues in our area.

Our Handbook focuses on the pilot work in the Kinlochbervie Community Council area. It also documents our work to understand the opportunities around Natural Capital markets across the NW2045, which took a locally-appropriate ‘crofting township’ approach, including crofters, land owner and community.

From our direct experience, we have developed 10 Principles of the Land+ approach, and have summarised the lessons we have learned from this work.
