This free session takes place on Wednesday, November 11th 2026 • 12 PM – 1 PM GMT.
What is this event about?
The Land Reform (Scotland) Act introduces new responsibilities for large landowners to engage with local communities about decisions affecting land.
As part of implementing the new Land Reform Act, the Scottish Government is consulting on community engagement obligations in relation to land management planning.
The Scottish Land Commission is encouraging everyone with an interest in land to respond to this consultation. The Commission will also be sending its own response to the Government’s consultation, and is listening carefully to stakeholder views in relation to this.
Where can you find the Scottish Government’s consultation?
The Scottish Government’s consultation is open until 26 January. You can read the full consultation here: Community Engagement Obligations and draft large land holdings guidance under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act.
You do not need to answer every question — simply respond to those most relevant to you. There is also a short survey for those unable to complete the full consultation: Questions to support discussion on Land Reform Act community engagement obligations.
Why does this consultation matter?
This is an opportunity to help shape regulations designed to improve communication and engagement between communities and landowners. A wide range of views will help ensure the regulations are proportionate and effective, supporting communities, rural businesses and the wider public interest.
This 1-hour online session is open to individuals, community organisations and representatives. The Scottish Land Commission’s Good Practice Advisers will explain the new obligations, what they could mean for communities, and how to take part in the consultation. A recording will be available on the Scottish Land Commission YouTube Channel afterwards.
The Scottish Land Commission’s Good Practice Team can also support community groups, landowners and anyone with questions about land rights and responsibilities. Find resources and support here.
