Sutherland Community Seaweed CIC was established in November 2025 following discussions within the NW2045 network about opportunities to strengthen the regional economy and address depopulation. The initiative aims to develop seaweed farming and processing operations in locations including Lochinver, Scourie and Kinlochbervie. Proposed sites would support the cultivation of several seaweed species, with harvesting and processing facilities located close to harbour infrastructure to minimise transport requirements. The project seeks to create new economic activity while supporting sustainable marine industries within the region.
